Description

The first two of these songs are basically strophic in structure; the other 5 are of an overlapping combinational nature, making a continuous flow out of scraps of material ‘found’ on top of the piano, self-composed ‘found’ objects. The dynamic and tempo are left open to the individual performers; but the style of performance should be substantial and sustained. As can be seen, the vocal parts appear sometimes in the treble and sometimes in the bass clef, and indeed, the songs could be sung by either a woman or a man, with necessary transpositions; these however should remain true to the original intervallic relationships within the song. New Songs of Social Conscience has appeared on a C.D. issued by the label Nomansland (Berlin), performed by M. Finnissy, piano & C. Newman, voice.
