Description

Ugubu is the Zulu term for the musical bow. Originally a hunting weapon, it developed into a single-stringed musical instrument with a resonating body, upon which solely a drone with overtones is played. Huyssen extracts formal criteria from Zulu music, which are then transferred to the solo composition and, in combination with western traditions, bring forth unusual rhythms and formal structures.
