Description
Daniel Göritz and Daniel Wolff met in 1994 while pursuing doctoral studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Their similar interests and activities in the areas of composing, arranging, performing and sight-reading soon led to a stimulating and productive cooperation as a duo. Both felt the need to enlarge their repertoire and had been making guitar transcriptions of works originally written for other instruments from an early age. Together they played through much of the existing repertoire for guitar duo as well as their own duo transcriptions, trying out different solutions and profiting from each other’s suggestions and ideas.
The transcriptions from the present recording bring to the realm of guitar duo a repertoire scarcely explored, perhaps on the assumption that the intrinsic pianistic qualities of these works forbade their adaptation. Nonetheless, that is often not the case, as many of the textures used by Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin can also be found in the music of their contemporary guitarist-composers, such as Sor, Giuliani and Aguado. Furthermore, the varied nature of the music from the first half of the nineteenth century – with its frequent changes in dynamics, articulation and texture – allows the transcriptions to be worked out in such a way as to provide a frequent exchange of register and function between the two guitars, thus creating a natural and balanced dialog.
Daniel Göritz lives in Berlin, Germany, where he teaches as professor of classical guitar at the “Hanns Eisler” music academy. Daniel Wolff lives in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he is professor of classical guitar at the Brazilian Federal University (UFRGS). In addition to their manifold individual chamber music and solo engagements, they are pursuing a regular collaboration as a duo, notwithstanding the geographical distance.
