Description

Kreuzungen is a piece in which two specific ideas are dealt with.
The first idea stems from my general interest in the combination of melody and
rhythmical “counterpoint”. The later has basically a structural function, somewhat similar
to the cyclic organization in Javanese and Balinese music. This means, along with other
points, that there is a special kind of a notated duration cycle that is not only vital for the
fundamental depth of the piece, but also for its coherence and balance. The harmonies
used within this structural framework are based on concepts of sound-colour, which have
their horizontal correspondence in the special intervallic structure of the melodies.
The second idea (which, in a way, gave the basic material for the realization of the
first one) is shown in the title (“Crossings”). I wanted to write music, which also deals
with space as a structural feature. I therefore developed a process involving a cycle of
relationships between the different groups: It starts with total individuality, although the
actual result could also be considered unified. The Soprano has a fluctuating function as
a leader, separate soloist or as chamber partner. Hierarchies are only temporary.
In the process of the piece, the relationships are constantly changing, which is expressed musically by special common or separated textures and a basic metrical relation
of 2:3:5:8.
At the end of the piece there is a similar situation to the beginning but under changed
circumstances, because here the process is both linear and cyclic. The different positioning
of the players in a performance hall enables me to clarify the various relationships.
