Description

This piece, written for Steve Beresford & the L. I. O., takes the shape of a model of the coexistence of the inside & the outside world, through juxtaposing purely improvised material (the upper line) with strictly notated material. The ‘improvisation’ line is divided up into ‘SOLO’ & ‘ENSEMBLE’: the SOLO should be in the form of a sung monody with one player singing along with her/his instrument (in unison or octaves); the words should also be improvised; there should only be one performer at any one time within the SOLO segments, but the performer could change for the next SOLO segment (or even within the segment); the music should be spontaneous composition, not based on preexisting material; it could be developmental but need not be, could be always new; the same goes for the ENSEMBLE segments which could vary in forces (say 2-8 musicians) – from segment to segment or even within a segment. The instrumentation of the notated half is left open to circumstance, as requested, but the instrumental format should be adhered to. The notated SOLO segments
are also in the form of monodies with one performer singing along with her/his instrument; they could be sung at any octave; the performer could change from segment to segment. The dynamic is basically forte throughout, but not forced or accented, rather sustained & substantial; the tempo is quarter = 84. The piece is in four movements; they should not be differentiated through characterization.
