Description
On November 14th 1990 London Concert Choir promoted a concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, celebrating the 90th Birthday of the iconic American composer, Aaron Copland. Sadly he died shortly after this birthday. The concert contained Copland compositions, but I wanted to open the concert with a fanfaretype piece, so I composed one myself, using the letters of his name as ciphers to create note-patterns.
I particularly centred around the initials of his name – AC, and I chose two piccolo trumpets to open and close the piece, placed either side of the stage. I am not sure that the style of the piece would have particularly appealed to Copland, with its busy, clashing note groups, but it was nevertheless composed with much respect towards a great composer.
