Description
Jens Rohwer’s (1914-1994) Suite 1959 was written for lutenist Walter Gerwig, and guitarist Sonja Prunnbauer premiered an early version in 1967. Considered too challenging by Rohwer’s publishers, the seven-movement neo-baroque composition – which lasts around 25 minutes and at times recalls Rohwer’s teacher and idol, Paul Hindemith – was not published during Rohwer’s lifetime. This first edition of the work, of moderate difficulty by today’s standards, is based on a variety of manuscript sources, including some from Rohwer’s estate. The score includes the editor’s fingerings and is accompanied by an essay on Rohwer’s life and work and a detailed critical commentary. This edition provides an opportunity to rediscover a substantial original guitar composition from the 1950s.
