Description
Yololiton chichiltic
little red insect
The text is really short and limited to just two words in classic Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs.
Yololiton (short for yololin) means small insect; the adjective chichiltic denotes the color chili-red, thus allowing reference to a small cactus-dwelling insect, the crimson mealybug, valued for the production of a precious dye.
With the sound of the terracotta flute, the score explores some characteristics of Aztec musical culture. The contemporary musical language deals freely with the traditional sounds, far removed from the use in traditional folk music.
