Preface
It goes without saying that Johann Sebastian Bach’s lute music belongs in the repertoire of today’s guitarists. It therefore seems pointless to discuss in how far this special oeuvre can be adequately represented on the guitar, despite all the objections, possibly even justified ones, which can be made by representatives of historical performance practice, lute players and musicologists. Regarding some works (e.g. BWV 996, 997 and 1000), even the question of how the score was handed down does not allow for conclusions to be made, just like the question of the original key. Indeed, the many cross connections between these works and Bach’s other instrumental compositions make a good argument for their representation on the modern guitar.
The aim of this publication is to offer interested guitarists a score which is both as correct as possible and yet also convincing with respect to the guitar, which will allow them to approach these works in a suitable way. Regarding arrangements for the guitar, we have tried to strike a balance between musical, as well as the stylistic requirements and technical playing criterion.
