“Kalih” is the third duet for two wind instruments after “Bulan” and “Selisih”. Both older pieces deal with rhetoric gestures similar to two persons who are talking to each other. “Kalih” makes also partly use from such elements, but it is more signified by a developmental proses from noise to pitch sounds. Here it happens in the sense of the unpitched as something growing from its rudimentary state until getting to very significant pitch sounds. The linear – or melodic – approach plays a prominent role in this piece. One may ask whether melodies are still possible today? I think this piece demonstrates a solution which is still worth to be investigated. The primary device here is a cantus firmus structure that becomes the frame of the piece and its various sections, except the last one when the piece so-to-speak dissolves into the sound of its beginning.
