A comparison between the sound of a held oboe pitch becoming a multiphonic and the sudden, blinding sensation caused by sunlight reflecting from a glass building provided the initial inspiration for Lament. As I thought about how I
might derive a structure for the work from ideas and practices associated with the sun and the orbits of planets and their moons, I came to a realisation similar to the one expressed by the psalmist:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-6, ESV)

This work is a personal meditation on my own moral and artistic failures before God. Lament was completed during the
early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, for Philippe Grauvogel, Jean-Christophe Vervoitte and Benoît Morel
of Ensemble Intercontemporain.
