The string quartet Mu Kkubo Ery’Omusallaba was written between 1988 and 1993. Originally composed at the request of the Kronos Quartet from California, the initially one-movement work developed into a classical four-movement composition, without however assuming anything more from the western string quartet tradition than the outer formal structure. the pentatonic tonal language, devoid of modulation, emerged from Tamusuza’s Kiginda tradition, as did the melodic formation without semi-tones and the oscillating pecussive quality.
