The work “Shimmering” by Rakhat-Bi Abdyssagin is an extremely delicate and finely written solo piece for oboe. It utilizes a myriad of techniques to enhance the oboe sound including smorzato, flutter tonguing, different kinds of vibrato and many opportunities for timbre fingerings. The selection of various multiphonics and quarter tones from my oboe book are masterfully embedded in the exquisite form of this work. It is wonderful to have this excellent addition to the oboe repertoire from a composer who has fully comprehended how to tastefully and successfully combine the lyrical qualities of the oboe with carefully chosen contemporary techniques.
