VORWORT

The concept of ”swarf” is a family name for residual materials in different size and quality. Swarf emerges when processing a piece of metal in a lathe. grinder or cutter. They can be anything from long, beautiful strands of razor-sharp spirals, to minuscule, inflammable particles close to pure soot.

The piece is a play on echoes of industrial environments I encountered as a child. My best friends family ran a foundry and I was fascinated by the noise of the workshop. The drones of industrial fans, the chirping and throbbing noises from the lathes and cutters. So many layers just fading in and out of the massive soundscape.

As a young adult I started working in various factories. Although most of the magic of these industrial sounds was lost to me, they where always present. They would sometimes modulate the music I was constantly imagining while working through the boring shifts. Merging into my thoughts and insisting on being part of the mix. Sometimes a drone would open up an escape route and off er a place outside time where strange dreams would unfold.
