“Tchaka” is based on ethnomusicological studies by the composer. Structural elements of African drumming can be
found in the composition in a state of both transformation and division. There is absolutely no intention to copy or
imitate the playing style or technique of African drummers. Typical tribal drumming patterns were used to generate
new patterns and configurations. It is still recommended, however, to play these pieces on original African instruments
if possible. It is also sensible if each player only uses one instrument and plays with his or her hands instead of using
sticks. The different pitches indicated in the notation can be achieved by striking different sections of the drumhead
(i.e. rim, middle etc.). A performance where each player plays several drums of differing pitch is also an option
and sticks can be certainly used in this case. The piece is dedicated to the remembrance of the heroic Zulu chief
Tchaka who actively resited the white man’s conquering of his land. “Tchaka” is available on CD in a recording by the
Omphalos Quartet.
