The idea of instrumentalists utilising breath sounds while they are playing their respective instruments, has interested me for years. I included these sound combinations in some pedagogically orientated pieces. This sparked my interest inspired me to extend the sound possibilities in my chamber music settings. It appeared to be a further possibility to avoid various – in my eyes – questionable new playing techniques. I believe the particular aura, that each musical instrument possesses, is enhanced by vocal extension and does not require a specific vocal training. This all became a very convenient and satisfying experience. These combinations also add to the implicit physicality of a performance and the numerous possibilities of blending and sound transitions. Whereas “Luft” (for large ensemble) mainly investigates the development from air sounds to instrumental ones, “Luft II” transforms these elements even further into additional instruments. Other aspects of this composition include the preparation of a second grand piano enabling extended harmonic techniques. Structural principles, based on central tones, become the last important aspect of the composition, similar to my related first attempts in “Ngumbang-Ngisep” from 2014.
