Beschreibung

Although I often think about titles, mostly deciding to use neutral words like “Duo”, “Trio” or even Balinese words that most people do not understand, all my last pieces have had more concrete ones. Beside perhaps some personal reasons, these recent compositions dealt more with images and visions in mind that are partly represented by the respective titles, without getting too programmatic. There should always be a hidden mystery, which seems to be essential for my conviction that a listener shall create its own story.

It is not different with this title here, which, at a first sight, seems to be a double paradox. However, I see it differently. The abyss represents a world, one dives into it without knowing where it will end or where the bottom is, but at the same time one can arise again with gloom and clarity that goes beyond anything. It is the other way around that the shining light makes things bright and seemingly beautiful at first sight, but then it may also dazzle until destroying something. Ultimately, it is less a double paradox, but
more a double ambivalence in which we are continuously living in, at least in my life.

Furthermore, it reminds me to the Balinese philosophy of kaja and kelod, which is the direction of the good forces (kaja) and the negative demonic ones (kelod). However, in both you may also find the opposite. The big volcano Gunung Agung (kaja) gives lava that is good for the soil but is also killing people and destroying houses when erupting (kelod). And so it is with the sea (kelod) that may kill people but also supplying fi sh as food (kaja).
